Inside and Outside Roulette Bets Explained

Inside and Outside Roulette Bets ExplainedIf you’ve ever seen a roulette table, you’ve probably noticed that there are 2 distinct areas in the betting track on the felt. There are words, numbers, and colours, and it can all be a bit confusing to new players.

It is important that you understand the distinctions between them. Lucky for you, you don’t need to look too far, because we explain the basics below.

Roulette’s Inside Bets

The inside bets are found on the inside of the betting track on the roulette table. These bets have much steeper odds than outside bets.

However, if you do strike it lucky, your payout will be much higher than if your outside bet had won.

A bet on 1 number on the table is a straight up bet. You can also put your chips on a line between 2 numbers, essentially betting on both of them. This is known as a ‘split’.

European and French roulette’s ‘single 0’ wheel lets you place a trio bet, which is a bet on 0, 2, 3, or 0, 1, 2.

American roulette’s ‘00 wheel’ gives you the opportunity to place a basket bet, which is a bet on 0, 1, 2, or 00, 2, 3, or 0, 00, 2. The same wheel also lets you place a top line bet on 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3. You can find different versions of roulette on our Online Roulette page.

If you place a bet on a horizontal line of 3 numbers, it’s a ‘street’ bet. Betting on 2 streets is known as a six line bet. You could also put your chips on the point where 4 numbers meet, known as a ‘corner’ or ‘square’ bet.

Roulette’s Outside Bets

You have an almost 50/50 chance of winning when you place roulette’s outside bets. Those are the bets on the outer edge of the track.

They don’t require too much thought, as you can bet on either an odd or even number to win, a red or black pocket to win, a low number between 1 and 18 to win, a high number between 19 and 36 to win, one of the numbers in a group of dozens between 1 and 12, 13 and 24, or 25 and 36 to win, or one of the numbers in a column of 12 numbers to win.

Knowing these basic differences already equips you to take on the tables with some confidence.
